THE BEAST (a.k.a La Bete) is a dreamy tale of a two women living in a large mansion, divided by 2 centuries that have the same physical experience with a short, hairy monster appropriately called THE BEAST. The black gorilla monster lives in the woods outside the estate, stalking each woman with a giant, horse-like phallus and a sexual appetite that cannot be satisfied.

The way in which Walerian Borowczyk directed this film it’s hard to tell of what happens to these woman are real or just fantasy. This is the film’s real charm as we are left to decide that for ourselves.

THE BEAST is kind of an erotic version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. The images in the film are done with artistry, though a few of them may be too shocking for some.

This 3 DVD Set features a Director’s Cut as well as The Complete Version. The Director’s Cut (94 minutes) actually runs much shorter as Walerian Borowczyk must have felt The Complete Version (117 minutes) prodded along too slowly, so the Director’s Cut does speed things up. There is a 2-hour documentary without sound, where you can see the production team working on making the movie. Using 2 hours of raw unedited footage without any kind of soundtrack is quite a different approach for a "Making Of" film but it’s nice because it gives you insight into how this unique film was made. The DVD also has trailer, stills, lobby cards and an attractive 52-page booklet.

I definitely recommend THE BEAST to those of you willing to explore a highly sexual, imaginary tale that will have you thinking long after the movie is over.
