Touted as one of the greatest monster movies of all-time, THE HOST easily achieves that status within the first 20 minutes.

A creature is living in the Han River, emerging on its shores to feed upon curious local onlookers.  When a young girl is taken, her family plunges into the sewery bowels to try and get her back.  At the same time, the government tries to protect the city population by creating mass hysteria in the form of a claimed unidentified virus.  All three sides meet with only one standing victorious.

It’s amazing how unapologetic this film plays out, considering after watching the documentary where director Bon Joon-Ho spends most of the time saying he was sorry to cast members for cutting them out of the film.

The monster in THE HOST is big, fast and nasty.  It is created when chemicals are dumped into the river.  VFX Supervisor Kevin Rafferty does a bang-up job overseeing the brilliant Visual Effects and Animation created by THE ORPHANAGE.

The 2-disc Collector’s Edition is positively brimming with extras.  There are 4-hours of special features.  Disc One includes the previous mentioned Director Bon Joon-Ho Reflections and Audio Commentary by Joon-Ho.  Disc Two has the excellent Making of The Host with Director Bon Joon-Ho, Storyboards, Memories of the Sewer, Set Design, Physical Special Effects, Sounds Effects, Designing the Creature, Puppet Animatronix, Animating the Creature, The Crew: Production & Visual Effect, Casting Tapes, Cast Interviews, Actor Training, Gag Reel, Cast & Crew Goodbye and more.  What more could you ask for.

THE HOST will satisfy your monster movie needs not disappoint and this Collector’s Edition 2-disc set kicks some serious butt.
