Sony Classical – 2003

James Horner continues his strong cinematic relationship with Ron Howard with THE MISSING. This is an epic size soundtrack running 1 hour and 17 minutes and I appreciated every second of it.

Surprisingly dark and subdued THE MISSING offers James Horner the opportunity to create suspense while retaining the beautiful melodies he’s famous for.

What a lot of this score reminded me was being out on the open countryside and listening to the wind blow. Sometimes it’s gentle and sometimes it gets gusty and nasty. I guess that would go along with the environment the film takes place.

The dirt is kicked up so to speak with the third track "Dawn To Dusk; The Restless Horse." Horner uses aggressive flutes and the orchestra to power this cut. The "Brujo’s Storm – A Loss Of Innocence" echoed A PERFECT STORM at times, though the American Indian tinged voices give it a unique touch.

"Setting The Trap - Staying One Step Ahead." has the tense construction that Horner used with similar
effectiveness in TITANIC. Like much of the rest of this score Horner goes for a more restrained approach
of conjuring the supernatural in "A Curse Of Ghosts."

Its not surprising mass audiences like James Horner’s music. He usually chooses good films and filmmakers to work with. THE MISSING is no different.
