The
Reaping – Music by John Frizzell Varese
Sarabande – 2007

Steeped in instrumentation that has African roots
THE REAPING is a score that is both scary and historical at the same time.
The orchestration is big at times and at other spots left for less
or even single instruments. John Frizzell uses acoustic guitar to give “The
Incident In Chile” the feel of a foreign land.
The composition sways back and forth in “The Call From Costigan”
between notes with strings screeching above like a bee ready to sting. “Trip To Haven” establishes one of the main
themes of the score, a soft string part that implies something mysterious
and dangerous. Wind chimes add a touch of creepiness to
“Katherine Encounters Lauren.” “Plague of Flies” is one of the most dramatic
cues off the soundtrack. Ripping
brass mixed with delicate piano makes for moody three and a half minute
listen. The whole score is balanced between music that
backs action within the film and more mellow parts that are character
oriented. It’s not just
mindless screaming brass and drums timed to strike at hit points within
the film. Frizzell wants to get you deeper than surface level and he
succeeds in my book. I haven’t seen this film yet, but will make the
effort on John Frizzell’s score alone. | ||
