Tom Griesgraber A Whisper in the
Thunder Spotted Peccary 2004 This whole CD has a groove that grabs a hold of you and never lets go. Because of this, its not surprising that Tom Griesgraber (its even in his name) is a bass player because grooves are usually originated with that instrument. Even when Griesgraber picks up an acoustic guitar "77 Times", the albums third track, he creates a pattern that you just fall into. His acoustic guitar playing in this song reminded me of the hauntingly beautiful style of Billy McLaughlin and feels like a celebration of life. Darren DeBree kicks his drum kit in unison with Griesgraber to make this tune standout. |

| A Middle Eastern feel is established via
percussion in "Ahab" and taken to atmospheric depth by Griesgrabers bass.
The Chapman Stick almost sounds like a low tuned acoustic guitar in "El Prado." "Jungle (pt 1)" and "Jungle (pt 2)" are slight variations on the same slightly melancholy theme. "The Frozen Ocean" is spacious with a slight touch of Indian sound. The California Guitar Trio (Bert Lams, Paul Richards, Hideyo Moriya) adds six-string dexterity to "Victors Chase." "A Tiny Whispering Sound" is a little love sketch. Griesgraber ends the CD off with the friendly, optimistic "Waking the Day." |
