Vacancy – Music by Paul Haslinger

Promo – 2007

Haslinger creates one of the coolest “Main Title” cues I’ve heard for a terror film.  It’s got a dark groove you’d normally find in an action film.  It actually reminded me of something you’d hear in a James Bond film.  Haslinger uses horrific suspense elements but puts them within a rhythmic groove that is fun and kind of hip.

“Drive By” features intense orchestration that comes right at you and doesn’t let up.  Haslinger constructs his music to climb the ladder of terror with huge drums puncuating the third track.

An onslaught of clanging percussion and drums and machine-like breathing make “Under Us” go.  Tender “No Ones Fault” gives us a chance to catch our breath and regain some composure before the terror returns.

Haslinger slams us with “Sabotage!”  The composition is quick, frantic and deadly.

“Dead Deputy” is the cue that backs the scene where a cop arrives to check out the Pinewood Motel.  Haslinger’s aggressive machinery of orchestra reinforces that all is not well for the onscreen characters.

Listening to “Amy Attack” made me feel like I was looking out a window only to have something frightening appear on the other said of the glass and it was coming to get me.

Haslinger wraps everything up with the return of the cool groove established in the opening credits.  I like how Haslinger embellishes the main rhythm by throwing in the scary elements to build the intensity until the last second.
