Whitesnake Slide It In |
|
|
| Its not hard to
figure out what the band is singing about with "Slide It In." "Slow
An Easy" incorporates the elements that would become Whitesnake trademark
sound, blues-y softer aspects that grow into hard rock. In the beginning of "Love Aint No Stranger," David Coverdales voice is kind of like foreplay before John Sykes guitar takes the band into the act of making love. "All Or Nothing" is a rocking tune where Jon Lords keyboards replace space reserved for a guitar solo. Cozy Powells drums and Neil Murrays bass fuel "The Gambler." Mel Galleys back-up vocals are really apparent in this tune. "Guilty Of Love" has a real infectious chorus. Coverdale really excels in this tune. I like the way Cozy Powell and John Sykes work in "Hungry For Love." David Coverdale asks to "Give Me More Time" to prove his love. John Sykes riff in "Spit It Out" grooves. The band works in unison to melodically rock "Standing In The Shadow." This original Whitesnake line-up featured a group of all-star musicians; David Coverdale sang for Deep Purple, Cozy Powell played drums for Rainbow, John Sykes was one of Thin Lizzys great guitarists, Jon Lord had played keys for Deep Purple and Guitarist/Vocalist Mel Galley use to be in Trapeze. Add that Martin (Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple) Birch produced the album and it was mixed by Keith (Foreigner & Fleetwood Mac) Olsen, you see the kind of talent involved with this first Whitesnake album. |

Whitesnake Geffen - 1987 |
|
| Lighting struck when
David Coverdale, John Sykes and Neil Murray added Aynsley Dunbar on drums to make this
timeless album. Mike Stone and Keith Olsen replaced Martin Birch as producers and rarely
has an album sounded so powerful and clean. WHITESNAKE is an album that produced multiple
singles and opened the doors for the band to strike it big time worldwide. The music
videos with Tawny Kitaen certainly helped also. From the first to last track the band hits the jackpot alternating between hard rocking tunes to songs with beautiful melody and sensitivity. David Coverdale should have never let John Sykes leave his band. As good as Steve Vai and Adrian Vandenberg are, they do not play with the same combination of authority and warmth that Sykes mastered. John Sykes meaty guitar riff in "Crying In The Rain" lets you know that the band means business from the get go. Then the band hits you with a second punch with "Bad Boys," which Im sure aptly described the bands after hours activities. What is so great about "Still of the Night" is that is a song designed to attract the ladies but its not a ballad. Sykes riff is heavy and Dunbar and Murray supply the huge bottom sound. David Coverdale is amazing in this song. The middle section where the band slows down to let Coverdale sing out, takes the track to an emotional pinnacle. This soft part of the tune features a orchestral string sound that opens up plenty of air for John Sykes to rip out an incredible guitar solo. "Here I Go Again" is a playful tune that became the video with Tawny Kitaen acrobatically sliding on top of David Coverdales sports car. John Sykes blazes a passionate guitar in "Give Me All Your Love." Sykes silky guitar tone in "Is This Love" helps set the stage for David Coverdale to romance the lyrics. This is and will be the most known song Whitesnake ever records. The melody of the tune is marriage of the bands musical talent mixed with Coverdales heartfelt voice. The song was made at perfect time when this kind of song was appreciated. Hard to believe, but this rocking band will have a song that is included at weddings and love song CD compilations for as far ahead as I can see. To reenergize you, the band rocks hard with "Children of the Night." Its good to arrange this kind of harder song after a ballad. John Sykes excels with a frenzied guitar. "Straight for the Heart" is more a straight-ahead rocker. You can really hear John Sykes singing back-up vocals in this tune which has been a missing ingredient since leaving the band. "Dont Turn Away" is a beautiful tune that tips back and forth between tenderness and hard rock. It is interesting to note that Adrian Vandenberg did contribute keyboard & some guitar on the album, which I guess must have happened when Coverdale and Sykes had their falling out. I remember after first hearing this album in 1987, it seemed unlikely this band could ever do any wrong. Everything was clicking on all cylinders and the world was eating up their music. Then John Sykes was out of the picture. That was blow to the band that they would never recover from. WHITESNAKE is a must for every CD collection. |

Whitesnake Slip Of The Tongue |
|
|
| "Slip Of The
Tongue" features excellent guitar playing from Steve Vai and bass work by Rudy Sarzo.
The band continues their sexually themed lyrics in a hard rock environment. In "Cheap
An Nasty" David Coverdale invites the women out there to do the dirty with him. Steve Vai seems to get comfortable in the rhythm of "Fool For Your Loving." The fourth track "Now Youre Gone" is a power ballad. "Kittens Got Claws" is a tune with playful sexual innuendo and Steve Vais convulsive guitar firepower. "Wings Of The Storm" is a straight-ahead rocker. "The Deeper The Love" is the most memorable song on the whole album and is the tune closest to "Is This Love" off the previous album. I like the way energy is transferred in "Judgment Day." Steve Vais guitar screams with whammy bar embellishment in "Slow Poke Music." "Sailing Ships" is the most moody and passionate song on the album. Steve Vai vocalizes his feelings in his expressive guitar solo and David Coverdales voice ends the album on a high note. |
