X2 Music by John Ottman
Superb Records, 2003 |
|
| John Ottman quickly establishes his elegant
composing touch with "Suite From X2." This opening track is driven by orchestral
force but is actually dominated by beautiful melodies, by now an Ottman trademark. Ottman undoubtedly would have scored the first X-MEN film but he was too busy directing, editing and scoring the sequel to URBAN LEGENDS. The late Michael Kamen provided an appropriate score but there is a real cinematic connection between Ottman and Bryan Singer. Ottman also usually edits Singers films so this is a return to that working relationship. Its amazing but Ottman makes you actually visualize tornados spinning across the skies with "Storms Perfect Storm." I really felt swept up in the strings in "Cerebro". Ottman wonderfully constructs all the orchestral elements to make "Mansion Attack" seven and a half minutes of pulse pounding tension. You damn near swear that Jerry Goldsmith was behind this heartfelt music. X2 score clocks in just over 1 hour and the stand out tracks not already listed include: the tug of war between good and evil in "Magnetos Old Tricks", the scoring pyrotechnics of "Playing With Fire", the slow buildup of "Death Strikes Deathstryke" and "Were Here To Stay" which musically makes you hope for another X-MEN film. 20 Century Fox must be complimented for putting out this first-rate score and the excellent PHONE BOOTH. Those soundtracks are both indeed superb records. |
